Whether you're comfy on the couch or streaming the latest episodes of your favorite shows on your lunch break to avoid spoilers, TV brings us together like no other medium. It's the ultimate water cooler (or, in many cases, these days, Slack channel) chat. To celebrate this weekend's Creative Arts Emmys (September 3rd and 4th), here's our annual roundup featuring nominated visual effects artists and editors.
Artists across the globe continue to deliver blockbuster-worthy effects (and shout out to the teams working on seamless VFX that audiences have no idea are even there). Congrats to all of our nominated customers, including Chickenbone FX, Cinesite, El Ranchito, FuseFX, Image Engine, Mr. X, Outpost VFX, Pixomondo, and Zoic Studios.
First-time nominee Jamie Barty, VFX Supervisor, at FuseFX, discusses the team's work on Snowpiercer and how they used Silhouette and Mocha Pro. Fellow Snowpiercer first-time nominee Jordan Acomba, Senior Visual Effects Editor at TNT, managed internal artists, all episodes in Avid, and coordinated with editorial. "I create proof of concept temps which is great fun. Mocha Pro is a great tracker," notes Acomba. "I had it as an Avid plugin and then as a standalone so I can also use it with Fusion. It helps me track shots that have foreground obstructions."
Three-time Emmy nominee VFX Supervisor Nathan Overstrom at Zoic Studios chats about what type of tasks his artists handled on SEE with the help of Sapphire and Mocha Pro.
Hear from Aaron I. Butler, ACE, nominated for Euphoria, as he discusses falling into editing, the power of group lunches, and why he loves editing. And the Severance editing team dives deep into what it's like working with director Ben Stiller in Art of the Cut.
Editor Taylor J. Mason has already made history as part of the first all-Black Emmy-nominated editing team for her work on season 2 of A Black Lady Sketch Show (HBO/HBO MAX). The first-time nominee chats about the moment she realized she wanted to be an editor, her fave moments, and using Sapphire and Mocha Pro in the sketch "Strictly Frizzness."
Nominee Mary DeChambres, ACE, of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars (Paramount+), discusses her career shift into editing, why she needs Sapphire plugins in her toolkit, and which other editors she finds exciting.
Thank you to all the nominees who partnered with us! And good luck to all the nominated teams. It takes a village.
